Work in progress on the loom in Mimi Jung's studio.

AIR SERIES

The series Air explores absence as a transformative force, reimagining it as a dynamic space inspired by the intangible yet vital rhythm of holding and releasing air. Rather than defining absence as emptiness, the series frames it as a generative space where contemplation takes shape.

Each form in Air dominates nearly the entire composition, as though shaped by the motion of containing air. Beginning from a singular, curved, tapered path, the forms spiral outward, expanding incrementally to evoke a sense of fullness. Their gradual evolution, with contours gently ballooning, suggests the rhythm of drawing in and releasing, where the form appears to momentarily envelop air, only to release and continuously reshape itself.

The weaving technique in this series departs further from the traditional perpendicular framework of the loom, embracing a method that aligns the weft parallel to the fixed warp at key moments. This innovative approach introduces greater fluidity and curvature, enabling the forms to transcend conventional weaving boundaries. By employing this technique, the work advances an exploration of dynamic, three-dimensional forms, pushing the structural and conceptual potential of the medium. The seamless, flowing motion of the works reflects the freedom and adaptability of air, which reshapes the spaces it inhabits without constraint.

Through the series Air, absence is underscored as a transformative and active presence. The forms embody the dual nature of air: inherently weightless yet capable of exerting pressure and instigating movement, akin to the fluid dynamics of perception. Absence is presented as a conduit—a deliberately held space for contemplation and reflection, ultimately functioning as a precursor to becoming.
